Section 3

What this chapter stands on

What is read is the build, not the material.

This chapter takes four things from the work before it. Then one distinction. Then the four conditions under all of it.

The corridor

From the chapter on medicine. Your body is an operator: a reader who can say no. It runs on a budget. It keeps itself inside a corridor, with a width, a drift and an exit.

That chapter read the corridor being kept open. This one reads the corridor being changed at the level of the build. In some bodies, the corridor can be widened, rebuilt or extended there. A part is added, or a part is swapped. The body’s own growth would never have produced it.

After the choice has begun

From the chapter on genetic engineering. That chapter set the conditions for editing a corridor before the person’s override-capacity has begun. Override-capacity is your capacity to choose: to commit to a path your raw impulses would not have chosen, wherever more than one path is open.

This chapter is about changing the corridor after that capacity has begun. Here the person is the authority over their own corridor.

That is a different place, and the reading there is different. The person’s authority carries weight here in a way it cannot before the person can choose.

Authority over your own mind

From the chapter on addiction. That chapter set out cognitive sovereignty: your authority over your own mind, below the boundary.

The boundary is the line at which what you do spills into the shared room at a cost others must carry. The shared room is the set of paths everyone can still take. The book calls it the joint viable set. Below it you are sovereign. Above it the structure acts.

This chapter carries that sovereignty over to augmentation. Where an augmentation stays inside your own corridor, and does not spill into the shared structure in amounts that matter, you decide. The decision to augment is yours.

The chapter reads the conditions the augmentation itself must meet, at the level of the build. It does not stretch the larger structure’s authority past the boundary the chapter on addiction drew.

The material does not matter

From the earlier books, in the chapter on other intelligences. What is read is the build, not the material. Whether a build meets its conditions depends on how it is joined and how it reads itself. What it is made of carries no weight in that reading. The book calls this substrate independence.

The chapter takes this over whole. An augmentation made of something other than the body’s own material is not refused for being different. It is not refused for being non-biological.

The test reads the build, not the material.

The building

And one distinction, from Ø Resolutions, Chapter Eleven. The I is the building, not the window. It carries the chapter’s weight, and it has a section of its own below.

The four conditions

Under all of it are the four conditions the axiom of the 420 Code produces. The axiom is one line: one record exists.

Symmetry. Two things can be read as the same kind of thing.

Break. The symmetry is broken. That is what lets anything happen at all.

Record. What the break leaves is held across time. It cannot be undone.

Constraint. A record is somewhere, not everywhere. So the break’s consequences cannot arrive everywhere at once.

These four run wherever two things couple. Coupling is two things changing each other and leaving a record of it. The four run where an augmentation joins a body. They run at the level of the build where it is taken in.

The chapter has no other ingredients.
