Section 13

Closing

The line is not the technology.

Widening is permitted. Narrowing to serve someone else’s preference is parasitic contraction of the future person’s capacity to choose.

The line is not the technology. CRISPR is a tool.

The line is whether the edit widens or narrows the corridor the future person will stand in.

A corridor widened from a closing it would otherwise have reached is maintenance. The future person inherits the corridor the chapter on medicine has been describing.

A corridor narrowed by someone else’s preference, choosing the person’s path in advance, is parasitic contraction. The future person inherits a corridor their own capacity to choose could not have selected against.

The same axiom that produces the corridor produces the test. The same test the chapters on the body have been building reads pre-agency editing, at the grain of the corridor the future person will receive.

The body is the window. The corridor is what the window can read across. The future person’s window is what pre-agency editing acts on. The chapter has set the test once. The chapters that follow read three further scales of the same window.

One image closes every chapter of this book. The ship is the person: one place where the now is being written. The wake is the pattern the ship leaves behind it. The ocean is the shared structure every wake is written into.

The ship is moving. The wake is forming. The ocean is receiving. The corridor is widening.
