The middle

The difficulty lives in the middle. The chapter does not pretend otherwise.

The clear cases sit at the ends. The difficulty lives in the middle. The chapter does not pretend otherwise.

Take a condition that does not kill, but that narrows the future corridor a great deal. Deafness. Blindness. A cognitive condition that affects how the future person models where they stand. Is editing it out widening or narrowing?

The widening reading. A corridor that includes hearing, sight or that cognitive capacity is wider than one that does not. So the edit widens the future corridor.

The narrowing reading. The future person who would have been deaf, blind or differently made in mind would have been a different person, with a different corridor. The edit removes that person from the paths that were open. It selects one kind of person in advance.

The chapter does not collapse this by decree. It reads each case at the grain where the corridor’s width can actually be told.

A condition that brings severe pain, exclusion from the shared room, or a radical narrowing of what the future person can connect with admits the widening reading with higher confidence. The book calls that last capacity coupling-capacity. Coupling is two things changing each other and leaving a record of it.

A condition that brings a different corridor, but not a narrower one, admits the narrowing reading with higher confidence. There the person’s way of connecting is built differently. It is not built at a coarser grain.

The chapter sets out the frame. Reading any single case needs honest engagement with the corridor the edit actually produces.

The test is real. It reads cleanly at the extremes. It does not give a categorical answer at every point in the middle.

The structure refuses to manufacture certainty where the corridor’s width is itself contested.

The honesty is the commitment. The manufactured certainty would be the parasitic move.
