Five chapters, one account

The body read at five scales. One account, not five.

Five chapters have closed. The body has been read at five scales.

The chapter on medicine set out the body as an operator with a budget and a corridor, and medicine as five levels of help. Fix the inputs. Let the body correct itself. Direct intervention. Living with permanent support. The exit. The larger structure supplies what the person alone cannot.

The chapter on genetic engineering set out the conditions for editing a body before its person can choose. The future corridor is what the editing respects. Widening it is upkeep. Narrowing the future person’s capacity to choose is parasitic: it shrinks another’s room when nothing required it.

The chapter on addiction set out your authority over your own mind, below the boundary. Addiction is the capacity to choose, collapsed under a corridor that narrowed faster than the alternatives could be widened. Recovery is the corridor widened again. The noise floor drops: the level any signal must rise above to register. New steadying records are written.

The chapter on augmentation set out when widening the corridor at the level of the body’s own build is valid: where impedance matching holds. It refuses augmentations that break the person’s loop of reading themselves.

This chapter sets out the person’s authority at the closing. The closing honestly read. The operator’s decision told apart from the narrator’s. The larger structure holding the floor, never overriding.

Five chapters. The same window, read at five scales. Keeping a body running. Editing a body before its person can choose. Authority over your own mind. Extending a body. The exit. The same test at each.

The body is where every person tests the axiom most directly. A civilisation that gets bioethics right is a civilisation that has read the window honestly at every scale.

One account

What the five chapters set out is one account, not five.

The body is the person’s own web of couplings. The corridor is the width across which that web keeps running. The larger structure is the shared structure the body is held within.

The person’s authority over their own life holds throughout. At level one. At level five. In editing the future person’s corridor before that person can choose. In authority over one’s own mind, under chemical or psychological pressure. In the augmentations the body can take. At the closing.

The larger structure’s responsibility holds throughout. To supply what the person alone cannot. To hold the dignity-floor at every level. To refuse to shrink a person’s corridor, parasitically, at any of the five scales.

The test set up in the chapter on medicine runs at every scale. So does the dignity-floor set up there. The five levels are the shape medicine takes wherever a corridor is being read.

The book calls the five chapters the bioethics spine. The spine is not a list of topics. It is one account of what a body is, what care is, what the larger structure owes, and what authority the person holds. Across the full length of the corridor.

The first chapter set up the test. The four chapters that followed read the same test at four more scales. This one closes where the corridor closes. A civilisation that has read the body honestly at all five scales has the foundation for medicine the spine has been building.

Why it ends here

The spine could not have closed at any other chapter.

Keeping a body running, editing a body before its person can choose, authority over your own mind, extending a body: these are the corridor running. The exit is where the corridor ends. The spine reads the window across the corridor’s length. So the spine ends where the corridor ends.

The test from the first chapter runs until the closing. At the closing, the test is what this chapter has set out.
