Section 2

You are already inside

You cannot step outside the question. Every body carries a finite corridor.

Try to deny the question. Say the right to exit is a separate moral question. Say the structure does not need to answer it.

Something has to do the saying. A body does it. A body whose corridor is finite. That body will reach the closing this chapter is about. You cannot say when. You cannot deny that it will.

The denial does not lift the one denying out of the corridor. The denial is itself a choice at work. It pictures its own future closing, and it takes a position on it.

The book has a word for that capacity. Override: your capacity to choose. To commit to a path your raw impulses would not have chosen, wherever more than one path is open.

There is no neutral ground from which to deny the question. Every reader is the person the question is about.

This is not a trick of argument. A finite corridor is what every body, everywhere, already carries.

The body you are reading from is a living web of couplings. It is kept going by renewing itself along the lines its own record has written. Its corridor has a width, and that width is finite at every point.

The chapter takes this fact seriously. It sets out what follows from taking it seriously.
