Where the reach ends
Five questions this chapter names and hands on.
This chapter sets up the test for your authority over your own mind, and for addiction. It does not settle every question beside it. Five are handed on.
Mental-health categories beyond the noise floor. The chapter has read mental illness through the noise floor and the corridor. It does not pretend that reading covers every category at the level clinical traditions need. Schizophrenia. Bipolar disorder. Autism. ADHD. Dissociative conditions. The personality disorders. Each has its own conditions, which the later work and the work’s other registers take up. The chapter sets the reading at one level. The detailed account at each clinical site is open work.
Substances and pathways the chapter does not work. The chapter has been plain about this. You apply the test elsewhere. The worked case does not cover every substance and pathway the test reads. The commitment is that the test runs the same way at other sites. The verdicts differ. The reading is yours, applied honestly.
Forced treatment. Below the line you are sovereign. Above it the correction hierarchy applies. Where use has crossed the line by a large amount, the hierarchy applies. Your authority below the line does not stretch without limit into the territory above it. What the chapter does not give is a procedure for forced treatment by institutions. When intervention is permitted. What forms it can take. How it stands toward the person’s own responsibility. How the institution checks its own reading of the person’s situation. The chapters on law and on governance take up the institutions. This chapter sets the test those institutions would have to honour.
Cognitive enhancement. The chapter has spoken of use that shrinks a person’s corridor parasitically. Use that widens the corridor is structurally different. It supplies the mind with resources it would not have produced alone. And your modelling can take them up at a finer level. The chapter on augmentation takes that up in detail. This chapter notes the difference. It does not close the question of when enhancement is upkeep of the mind, and when it is parasitic.
The conditions that lock the pathways. Trauma, pain, isolation and deprivation are the conditions under which a person settles into paths that shrink their room parasitically. The chapters on law, economics, the environment and resource allocation take up the larger structure’s responsibility to supply the dignity-floor at level one. This chapter notes that the conditions of the mind’s corridor cannot be separated from the conditions of the larger structure. The five chapters on the body read at one scale. The later chapters of the book extend the same reading.
These are limits, not failures. This chapter sets up the test for your authority over your own mind. The rest is next work: in the book’s other chapters, and in your own running of the test.
