Section 10
The correction
Condemnation narrows the corridor. Recalibration widens it.
The correction for addiction follows from the structural account. It has three parts.
Lower the noise floor, with support
To widen the corridor again, the noise floor has to come down during acute withdrawal.
The mind and body cannot recalibrate unless the withdrawal is supported at the dignity-floor. Pain relief. Presence. Real support. The larger structure supplying what the person’s own system cannot supply alone.
Condemnation in the acute phase narrows the corridor further. The right response is for the people and institutions around the person to engage at the level the person’s body and mind need.
Write new records
New records that hold are how the corridor widens again. As the noise floor drops, the person’s history begins to register alternatives. It registers them at a level the person’s capacity to choose can take up. New paths open.
The writing is the person’s own work. The larger structure’s part is to supply the conditions in which the writing can happen. Therapy. Support groups. Medication-assisted treatment. A changed environment. People to be with again.
The conditions are the structure’s. The writing of the records is the person’s.
Attend to the history underneath
The locked pathway became the lowest-cost path because the person’s history made it so. Trauma. Pain. Isolation. Deprivation. The larger structure failing to supply the dignity-floor at level one.
These are the conditions under which the person settled into the locked pathway.
Recovery that does not address the history underneath is recovery the conditions will resist.
Relapse
Relapse is not moral failure. It is the predictable result of a corridor that narrowed faster than the alternatives could be widened. The structure reads relapse as a fact: widening the corridor again is slower than its narrowing was.
The response to relapse is not condemnation. It is continued support at the dignity-floor. And continued attention to the history the locked pathway was answering.
The reading is the same throughout. Apply it to your own corridor, or to someone else’s, with the same commitment.
