The worked case

One case, walked all the way. The verdict is for this case.

The chapter runs the test on one substance, as a worked case.

How it is done matters. It walks the test through one case where no major medical or social tradition disputes the verdict. It does not work the test through other substances. You do that.

The case is recreational opioid use under non-medical conditions. A person using opioids outside medical supervision, for no clinical purpose, at the amounts and frequency they have settled into over time.

The case is clean for four reasons.

The noise floor rises

Opioids recalibrate the noise floor fast. Within weeks of regular use, the body’s own opioid-receptor activity recalibrates. The substance becomes required to keep anything like baseline.

The mind’s reading of the corridor’s width before the use is no longer its reading after. The noise floor has risen sharply. The change is observable, measurable, and agreed across the major medical traditions.

The corridor narrows

Paths that were open before regular use are now weighted heavily against. Company without intoxication. Work. Sleep without sedation. Pleasure that does not come through the substance. Modelling at the level your capacity to choose needs for a range of commitments.

The corridor narrows fast. The narrowing is structural, not moral. Your capacity to choose cannot widen it again, inside the corridor as it now is, without substantial help from outside.

Withdrawal

Withdrawal here is catastrophic, in the strict structural sense. The corridor does not close gradually. The body cannot recalibrate fast enough to stay viable without substantial help from outside. The risk of death during acute withdrawal is not trivial.

The fact is observable, measurable, and agreed across the major medical traditions.

The line is crossed

Recreational opioid use spills over. Money drawn away from those who depend on the person. Harm spreading through informal supply networks. A public-health load the larger structure has to carry. The shared room shrunk, parasitically, at the scale of the whole.

The crossing is large. Its size can be seen. The structure reads it as well above the line.

The verdict

The test, run honestly, gives a clear verdict.

Parasitic contraction of cognitive sovereignty at substantial externalised cost.

The verdict is the chapter’s, for one worked case. The chapter does not extend it to other substances. It does not extend it to other pathways. It is one site where the test runs to a reading the chapter is willing to stand behind.

The discipline has to be named. This is one worked case. It is not a full list of substances.

You run the test elsewhere

You apply the test to the substances the chapter does not name. Alcohol. Stimulants. Nicotine. Cannabis in its various forms. Prescription medicines used outside what they were prescribed for. Screen loops. Gambling. Any pathway that locks.

Each has its own geometry of consequence. The test runs the same way on each. The verdicts will differ. The chapter does not rule on them. It sets up the test.

The work describes. It does not exempt.

Any substance you use will be run through the same test the chapter set up. The verdict may differ from the one for recreational opioid use. The test does not.

Run the test honestly on one substance you use, and you may find parasitic contraction at substantial cost to others. Run it honestly on another, and you may find a non-parasitic structural cost that is yours to carry, below the line, where you are sovereign. Run it honestly on a third, and you may find the verdict is mixed. Parasitic and non-parasitic parts, to be read layer by layer.

The structure does not commit in advance to any of these verdicts, at any site the chapter does not work. Your own honest run of the test gives the reading at your own site.
