Section 8
Mental illness
Not a moral category. Not a failure of will.
The reading reaches further. To mental illness.
Mental illness, in the sense this chapter needs, is the mind set at a noise floor and a corridor that shrink its modelling. They shrink it below what your capacity to choose needs to commit to a path that holds.
The condition is structural. It is real. It makes the person read their own corridor as a corridor that has narrowed.
Depression
Depression is the cognitive corridor narrowing everywhere at once.
Fewer paths register as live. The mind’s reading of the corridor as wide collapses. Your capacity to choose depends on registering alternatives. In depression, the alternatives are not there to register.
Depression is not a moral category. It is not a failure of willpower. And the person’s reading in depression is not their reading at the corridor’s full width.
The structure reads the narrowing and recommends widening the corridor again. Through level one: the inputs the larger structure supplies. Through level two: the mind’s own correction, where its own workings can do the work. Through level three: intervention, where the lower levels are not enough.
Anxiety
Anxiety is your modelling running at a hyperactive noise floor.
The mind registers threats at a finer grain than its corridor’s conditions call for. The paths you see are shaped by the threat-modelling. Not by the conditions actually there.
The structure reads the noise floor. It recommends recalibrating the mind through the same hierarchy.
The reading generalises
The noise-floor reading reaches across mental-health categories the chapter does not rule on in detail. It reads at the level of the corridor. The response is to support the corridor, through the levels of the correction hierarchy.
The chapter does not pretend every mental illness comes down to a disturbed noise floor at every site. It sets the noise-floor reading as the one the five chapters on the body carry forward.
