Passive prosthetics

The corridor widens. Control keeps pace. Maintenance.

Next come passive prosthetics. They supply a part the body has lost. And they work at a grain the person’s build can take in without itself being changed.

A prosthetic leg

A prosthetic leg restores walking. It works at the grain at which your modelling of your own movement already runs.

It does not extend your build past what the biological leg did. It supplies what the leg supplied. In some respects less finely. In others just as finely. Your modelling takes in what it does at the rate your control has always worked at.

A cochlear implant

A cochlear implant restores hearing, at a grain your modelling can take in.

It turns sound into nerve signals the hearing brain processes. The brain’s reading of sound may have grown since birth. Or it may have grown across years of hearing loss. Either way, it takes in what the implant supplies at the rate the build supports.

A pacemaker

A cardiac pacemaker keeps the heart’s rhythm where the build needs it, so the corridor stays viable.

It works below the grain of your modelling. You do not consciously take in its pulses at the rate it delivers them. The heart’s own tissue takes them in, at the level of biology. Your loop runs on across the device, without your modelling having to take it in at all.

The verdict

These cases are clean at the test. The augmentation widens the corridor. Your control keeps pace with what the augmentation supplies, or more than keeps pace. Your modelling takes it in at a rate it can carry. The loop runs on.

The verdict is maintenance, at the level of the build.
