Section 11

Where the reach ends

Five questions this chapter names and hands on.

This chapter reads medicine as the correction hierarchy at the scale of the body. It does not settle every question beside it. Five are handed on.

The mind. The chapter has spoken of the body’s corridor. The mind has its own: where you register yourself, model where you stand, and choose. It has its own correction hierarchy. The same five levels reach it, with their content adapted to where mental health lives. Chapter Seven, on addiction and authority over your own mind, takes this up.

The closing. Level five was named here and not developed. Chapter Nine takes it up, with the authority the person holds at level five.

Editing before the person exists. This chapter is about a body whose person is already living in it. Help given before that person can choose is its own question, with its own conditions. Chapter Six, on genetic engineering, takes it up.

Widening the corridor. A corridor can be widened as well as narrowed. A cochlear implant restores hearing where it had gone. A pacemaker restores a rhythm the heart could no longer keep. Neural interfaces are beginning to restore movement and speech where they had been lost. Chapter Eight, on augmentation, takes it up.

The systems that supply level one. The chapter has placed level one on the larger structure and named the responsibility. It has not built the laws, the economics or the policy through which level one is supplied. The book’s chapters on law, governance, economics, the environment and resource allocation do that.

These are limits, not failures. This chapter reads the window at the scale of the body. The next four read the same window at four more scales.
