Section 10

Scarcity and the floor

Above the floor, read what the help can restore. Below the floor, no one is pushed.

Resources are finite. Bodies are many. Not every level of help can reach every body in every place. The structure does not pretend otherwise.

Chapter Twelve reads how resources are shared at the scale of the planet. This chapter takes that reading to the scale of the body. Two things carry the weight.

The first is coupling-capacity projection. In plain words: look ahead at what an intervention preserves. That reads the corridor the intervention can restore. Never the person’s standing. Never their relationships. Never how useful they are to others.

The second is the dignity-floor. There is a floor that care never falls below. Whatever the projection says. However scarce the resources. Whatever else is being calculated.

The floor is the minimum every body is held at so that its corridor can still be a corridor at all: the level at which a body can still read itself. Pain relief. Enough food. Shelter. Presence. Care for the closing, where the closing is what the corridor has become.

The dignity-floor is not sentiment. The shared room is not widened by any allocation that pushes one of its own bodies below the level at which that body can still read itself. To push a body below that level is parasitic. It is the shared structure shrinking one of its own below the point where it is still a living whole.

Projection reads above the floor. The floor does not move.

The chapter does not give a procedure for every triage case. It sets the structure inside which triage happens. The detailed work belongs to the medical system and to Chapter Twelve.

What the chapter commits to: allocation reads what can be restored above the floor, and refuses to fall below the floor. Full stop.
