Section 9
Prevention is a fact
Help that comes too late is paid for twice.
Prevention here is not advice. It is not wellness culture. It is a fact about what medicine costs.
Each level has a price. Level one is the cheapest, by a factor of ten or more. Sleep, food, movement, less stress and people cost the larger structure less per body than any other level.
Level three is the most expensive per intervention. Surgery. Medication. A hospital bed. Recovery time.
Level four adds up over a whole life. One chronic condition treated for fifty years becomes the largest share of everything that body ever costs in medicine. Level five has its own costs, and in many cases it is where level four ends.
The costs have a shape. Level three is paid on top of whatever was tried at levels one and two. Level four is paid for as long as the corridor stays narrow.
So a level-three or level-four treatment that level one could have prevented costs both. The level-one cost and the higher cost.
Both, not one.
A civilisation that under-funds level one is not saving the level-one money. It pays it anyway, later, as extra level-three and level-four cost. And it pays in narrowed bodies too: the bodies the under-funding produced.
Run honestly, the geometry says the best medical system funds level one most heavily. Level two next. Level three where it is actually needed. Level four where the corridor cannot be widened again. Level five at the level dignity demands.
The research has been finding this for decades. The chapter does not need the research to derive the fact. It notes that the two meet.
And this is not the wellness reading. Wellness puts prevention on the person, as a personal achievement. The structure puts it on the organism, as its responsibility.
The person is responsible for the choice the person has. The organism is responsible for the conditions that choice works inside.
The two responsibilities are both real, and they are different. A medical system that mixes them up is reading at the wrong scale.
